Commercial Outdoor Living

Outdoor space is underused by most commercial premises in the UK, and the reason is usually the same: nobody planned it properly.

A few plastic chairs on a patio isn’t an outdoor area. But a well-designed terrace with the right shelter, seating and heating can add meaningful trading capacity, make a real difference to how the business looks from the street, and stay in use for more of the year than most people expect.

The UK weather argument doesn’t hold up the way it used to. With the right setup, outdoor commercial space can work from March through to November with no difficulty, and year-round if you invest in it properly.

What we design

Outdoor dining and terrace areas for restaurants, pubs and hotels. External seating for cafes and coffee shops. Courtyard and garden spaces for office premises. Reception and entrance areas with covered outdoor elements.

We also work on commercial awnings and canopy structures — both freestanding and wall-mounted — and on the outdoor furniture specification that goes with them. The furniture matters more than people think. Domestic garden furniture doesn’t last two seasons in a commercial setting.

What the work involves

Shelter and coverage. Whether that’s a fixed canopy, a retractable awning, a pergola structure or a combination. We look at the orientation of the space, the wind exposure, and how much flexibility you need.

Heating and lighting. The two things that extend the usable season most. Infrared heating mounted well doesn’t intrude on the space. Lighting makes an outdoor area feel intentional rather than temporary.

Furniture and surfaces. Specified for commercial use, for the climate, and for how the space will actually be used. Not everything sold as commercial outdoor furniture is built for it.

Planning and permissions. Some structures require permitted development approval or full planning permission. We’ll tell you early what applies to your project so there are no surprises.

Starting a project

A site visit is the best place to start. Outdoor spaces vary enormously depending on orientation, access, neighbouring buildings and what the business needs from the area. We’ll come and look at it properly before putting anything on paper.Share
